Cupid for Christmas

Relationships have been on our mind this Fall and there’s one we still haven’t talked about: dating. In Jr. and Sr. High, it seems like the whole world revolves around it! He’s going out with her…she’s dating him…he dumped her…ad infinitum (look it up!). If you don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend you want one and every chance you have to even SEE someone of the opposite sex becomes a fantastic possibility! Even if you already are dating someone, there’s always the chance of meeting someone better it seems.
Sometimes with all this hand holding, oogley-eye making, flirty, boy-girl excitement we lose track of the point of it all. What is the point of dating? There’s one point to dating and one way it should be done.
The Point: To find a husband or wife.
The Way: To the glory of God
Some cultures have arranged marriages where a husband or wife is chosen by the parents. That’s one way to find a spouse but we do it by dating. Dating exists for the sole purpose of finding a husband or wife. Seems a little simple and a tad exclusive but it’s the truth. There are many benefits that come through real dating and the interactions we have as a member of a close relationship with another person, but the only reason dating exists is to find a spouse.
Because of this, in Sr. High this December we’ll take a look at marriage and singleness. What is marriage? Why did God create it? Is everyone meant to get married or can some people be called to singleness?
Also the way in which we date should be to the glory of God. Remember our theme verse from Colossians 3:17: “Whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Our dating relationships also need to be “in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Because of this, we’ll also talk about how we date to the glory of God. How far is too far? Is it okay to date someone who isn’t a Christian? Can we live together?
December will be a really interesting month at Large Group and Small Groups.
Don’t miss out!
